Alter Bridge - Blackbird (2007)

I wasn't sure what to start my blog with so I figured I would review one of my favourite CD's of all time.

For a start this band is amazing and if you haven't listened to them then I highly suggest that you either check them out on youtube or buy one of the records because they do not disappoint, and when it comes to writing music they actually have talent which is refreshing to see because so many bands are coming through that have no musical talent.

This album is one of the more versatile and well produced records in history, tracks such as Ties That Bind, Come to Life, One by One and White Knuckles showcase Alter Bridge's members talent through fast, riff driven anthems that are heavy enough for metalheads but also catchy enough for the average joe, Myles Kennedy (formerly of The Mayfield Four) may very well be one of the greatest vocalists of this generation with his lyrics following dark and twisted themes such as Money, Drugs and Death which suit his voice so much that it makes the listener feel every bit of emotion that radiates through the speakers. The emotional rock songs are also showcased on this record with tracks such as Rise Today, Watch Over You, Brand New Start and Wayward One producing alot of feeling and success without being written as mainstream songs.

Almost every song on this CD stands out as a classic rock anthem for the masses, but none more so than the title track Blackbird. This song gives me the chills every time I listen to it, the lyrics follow a somber tale about death being embodied in the form of a blackbird, the music follows the lyrics perfectly with Kennedy and Mark Tremonti (formerly of Creed) providing most of the feeling with the intro having just the guitars playing, once you think the tone of the song is set to be slow and dim throughout the entire band tear into a huge chorus including some intricate bass playing by Brian Marshall (formerly of Creed) which goes unnoticed by most people. After a couple of verses and another chorus Kennedy offer an interesting little rhythm guitar solo being held together nicely by the drumming of Scott Phillips (formerly of Creed). As Myles finishes his solo, Mark rips right into one of the most fitting solos I have heard in a long time, perfect for some air guitar action, Tremonti is without a doubt an amazing guitar player which was shown during his time with Creed but never to the extent that you see in this song.

Once you have listened to this album in its entirety you almost need to take a step back due to the amount of emotion that makes its way into you body through Kennedy's vocals. I have no doubt that Alter Bridge are already a force to be reckoned with after becoming one of the few new bands to actually be able to fill out large stadiums due to their loyal and extremely large fanbase.

9.5/10
